Global Engagement Model

NKT teams often deal with legacy applications critically important to organizations since they incorporate critical business processes and sometimes company policy. However, these applications can be stumbling blocks for an enterprise-wide IT architecture and present several challenges in their ongoing maintenance. Issues may be high maintenance costs, unavailable experienced resources, and difficulty adapting to changing business and regulatory environments.

NKT's Application Migration and Reengineering solutions help organizations overcome these problems, and frees the value of these applications. The return on investment (ROI) for a migration project comes from enhanced business support, significant improvement in ability to integrate applications, and reduced licensing and maintenance costs.

NKT Expertise
NKT follows a structured methodology for migrating legacy applications. This enables a phase-wide and iterative approach allowing clients to partition the project into manageable units, minimizing risk. NKT has assisted several Fortune 500 clients this way. Our teams of system and business analysts have significant expertise in re-engineering mainframe-based applications.

NKT's Migration Services teams developed standard templates and methodologies for several common migration paths, including AS 400/proprietary Unix to Linux/Wintel, Informix to DB2 or Oracle, and mainframe-based transaction processing to Java or .Net platforms.

NKT's expertise in chosen business verticals is a key factor in our ability to successfully execute large re-engineering projects. Also, NKT has proven capability to develop parsers to extract and forward-engineer business rules residing in legacy applications.

NKT Offerings
NKT's Migration and Reengineering methodology adopts a four-phased approach. Critical to this approach is ensuring continuity and transparency across all phases. This is achieved by using tools that bind and drive the entire project.

NKT capabilities cover the spectrum of application migration and re-engineering including:
  • Application Analysis: Analyzing the suitability of an application migration or re-engineering exercise including choice of the target architecture.
  • Portfolio Analysis: Analyzing the suitability of re-engineering an entire portfolio of related applications.
  • Platform Migration: Migrating an existing application to new hardware, operating system, database or programming environment.
  • Application Re-engineering: Completely redesigning an application to provide superior functionality by taking advantage of new technology standards.

CASE STUDY

Success story: Cost-saving solution

Challenge
A mainframe-based capital project management system used by a large telecom services provider was incurring significant licensing costs and had become difficult to maintain, with little documentation and no original development team members available.
NKT Solution
NKT analyzed the situation and recommended complete restructuring based on J2EE technology to enable easier user interaction. Our analysts sifted through a million lines of code using a custom-built parser to extract programming logic that was then represented using UML standards. This programming model was then functionally enhanced to meet the client's changing business needs. NKT's architects and developers then built a new application using Java technology on a Weblogic platform in a short period of 12 months.
Benefits to Client
  • Annual savings of over $800,000 on licensing costs
  • Increased user productivity due to enhancements in business functionality
  • Critical functionality exposed to a wider set of users through use of Web Services
